Esteban Batallán

Born in Barro (Pontevedra) in 1983. He began his musical studies at 7 years old at the School of Music in his hometown. Continuing with his studies at the Conservatory of Music in Pontevedra and the Conservatory of Music of Vigo with the teacher Javier Viceiro.

In 1999 he joined the School of Musical Studies of Galicia, where he received master classes from Javier Simó. In 2000 he was selected as a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Spain (JONDE), where he remained until 2003.

In 2002 he won the Principal Trumpet position in the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, a position that he held until September 2018 and in which he is on leave.

During his short but intense career he participates in several competitions getting different prizes: Competition “Jeunesses Musicales of Spain,” 2001: First Prize; National Contest “Yamaha Xeno” 2002: First Prize; European Competition “Jeunesses Musicales International”, 2002: First Prize; Yamaha International Competitions, 2003: First Prize and the International Competition “Ville de Paris Maurice André”, 2006: Fourth Prize.

He has collaborated with some orchestras in national and international level, such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Hong Kong Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala, English Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, Gstaad Festival Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra of India, Basel Sinfonieorchester, Royal Symphony Orchestra of Seville, Symphony Orchestra of Galicia, Orchestra of Spanish Radio Television, National Orchestra of Porto, Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, among others.

As Soloist he has played with Emsemble Orchestral of Paris, Orchestra of Radio Spanish Television, Gstaad Festival Orchestra, Orchestra of Cordoba, Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, Geneva Camerata, Concerto Grosso Frankfurt, National Youth Orchestra of Spain, Philharmonic Orchestra of Pontevedra, Symphony Orchestra of India, among others, and works like Haydn, Hummel, Tomasi, Aroutunian, Jolivet, Bach Brandemburg, among others.

During these years he worked under the direction of great conductors like, Riccardo Muti, Jaap van Zweden, Riccardo Chailly, Zubin Metha, Bernard Haitink, Daniele Gatti, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Alan Gilbert, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Michel Plasson, Gerd Albrecht, Tom Kopmann, Lopez Cobos among others and also, He has worked with international soloists, such as Yo-Yo Ma,  Frank Peter Zimmerman, Viktoria Mullova, Gregory Sokolov, Juan Diego Florez, Maxim Vengerov, Placido Domingo, Fabio Biondi, Steven Isserlis, Nobuko IMOI, Emanuel Ax, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Labeque sisters, Martial Solal and other musical artists as Sting, Michel Camilo , Miguel Ríos and Ennio Morricone.

He played in some of the most impotant Halls in the world as Chicago Orchestra Hall, Muziekverein Vienna, Berlin Philharmonie, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Tonhalle in Zurich, Victoria Hall Geneva, Barbican Hall in London, Hong Komg Cultural Centre, Salle Gaveau in Paris, Jashmed Bhabha Theater Bombay or Konzerthaus Berlin, among others.

In 2003 and 2017 he was invited to play the Principal Trumpet Audition in Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

From 2010-2014 he was Guest Principal Trumpet of the Royal Symphony Orchestra of Seville (ROSS).

During 2015 and 2018 he was part, as Principal Trumpet, of the Orchestra of the Teatro alla Scala and Filarmonica della Scala.

In 2016 He was invited by the Symphony Orchestra of India (SOI) for a tour in Switzerland and India in which he played the Concerto for piano, trumpet and strings of Shostakovich and He was Principal Trumpet of the SOI until February 2018.

In the field of teach, he was during 16 years, the teacher of the Young Academy of the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, and is often invited professor of the National Youth Orchestra of Spain and the Youth Orchestra of Andalusia.In 2016 he was guest for the Associazione Musicale Giuseppe Verdi di Sant’Agata di Militello in Sicily, where besides of be teaching acted as soloist with the Sicilian Brass Group.

Actually, since October 2018, Esteban Batallán is Principal Trumpet of the Hong Kong Philharmonic and Guest Principal Trumpet with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra .

  1. Great performance of the Rossini Stabat Mater with Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on June 23rd. People were asking who the great guest principal trumpet was. This is in Chicago, where trumpet players are held to a high standard.
