J\u00f3venes o mayores, estudiantes o profesionales, casi todos los trompetistas tienen una historia que contar sobre la Orquesta Sinf\u00f3nica de Chicago, y su tan famoso y poderoso sonido de metales. Detr\u00e1s del escenario en el Orchestra Hall, el c\u00e9lebre trompeta principal de la CSO, Esteban Batall\u00e1n<\/a>, comparte sus propios recuerdos sobre un encuentro accidental con una leyenda viva durante su participaci\u00f3n en una audici\u00f3n en 2003.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El virtuoso, de origen espa\u00f1ol, que fue nombrado miembro de la CSO en 2019 por el director musical Riccardo Muti, era en ese entonces un joven int\u00e9rprete de la Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, pero su sue\u00f1o era tocar alg\u00fan d\u00eda en CSO. Caminando por un pasillo del Orchestra Hall, Batall\u00e1n levant\u00f3 la vista, asombrado al ver nada menos que a Adolph Herseth, trompeta principal em\u00e9rito de la CSO viniendo hacia \u00e9l desde la otra direcci\u00f3n. Herseth pas\u00f3 una mirada discreta a la caja de trompetas de Batall\u00e1n y sigui\u00f3 adelante.\u00a0Adolph Herseth,<\/a>\u00a0el entonces trompeta principal em\u00e9rito de la OSC, que ven\u00eda hacia \u00e9l desde la otra direcci\u00f3n. \u00abMe qued\u00e9 sin palabras\u00bb, dijo Batall\u00e1n, se\u00f1alando que sus \u00eddolos desde la infancia hab\u00edan sido Herseth, el trompetista franc\u00e9s Maurice Andr\u00e9 y el instrumentista de jazz latino Arturo Sandoval. \u00abCrec\u00ed decidiendo ser trompetista gracias a ellos. En los a\u00f1os posteriores a 2003, Batall\u00e1n ir\u00eda ganando experiencia. Se convirti\u00f3 en trompeta principal con la Filarm\u00f3nica de Hong Kong, se posicion\u00f3 con la CSO como principal trompeta invitado en el Orchestra Hall e incluso viaj\u00f3 con la CSO de gira antes de obtener el puesto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ahora con 37 a\u00f1os, Batall\u00e1n est\u00e1 afianzado como l\u00edder de trompeta de la CSO, y ha estado ocupado organizando el repertorio para el concierto anual de CSO Brass, programado este a\u00f1o para el 15 dediciembre<\/a>, con la ayuda de su colega, el trompetista, John Hagstrom. El popular concierto de metales, con un contingente completo de trompetas, trompas, trombones, trombones bajos y tuba, se ha convertido en un concierto imprescindible a mediados de diciembre en el calendario de la CSO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El CSO Brass interpretar\u00e1 en esta ocasi\u00f3n un arreglo de la suite Sacrae,adaptaci\u00f3ndel propio Batall\u00e1n, de m\u00fasica solemne de la liturgia rusa compuesta por compositores de finales del siglo XIX como Pavel Chesnokov, Aleksandr Sheremetev y Mikhail Shukh. \u00abEstos no son los famosos compositores rusos como Rachmaninov y Tchaikovsky, pero los colores rusos son muy ricos, y hay algunos efectos antifonales maravillosos, como en las composiciones de Gabrieli\u00bb, dijo Batall\u00e1n. \u00abY Shukh, que adoraba a Shostakovich, cre\u00f3 algo as\u00ed como una oraci\u00f3n silenciosa\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Para mayor majestuosidad, los intrutrumentistas de metal de CSO profundizar\u00e1n en \u00abJupiter, the Bringer of Jollity\u00bb de The Planetsde Holst<\/em>. Tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1 prevista una gloriosa obra maestra rom\u00e1ntica arreglada para conjunto de metales: el rotundo final \u00abAuferstehen\u00bb de la Sinfon\u00eda de la Resurrecci\u00f3n<\/em> de Mahler. Ahora Sandoval le ha correspondido con una pieza para fliscorno llamada \u201cMr. Batall\u00e1n.\u201d<\/a> \u00c9l y Batall\u00e1n la leyeron recientemente juntos en la casa de Sandoval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La trompeta que utiliza Batall\u00e1n es una que el propio Herseth us\u00f3, y es parte de un conjunto de trompetas Vincent Bach C de gran calibre que Fritz Reiner<\/a>, entonces director musical de CSO, encarg\u00f3 a la factor\u00eda para que la orquesta adquiriera en 1955. \u00abEligieron lo mejor del lote\u00bb, dijo Batall\u00e1n. \u00c9l utiliza una, y tambi\u00e9n lo hace su colega Hagstrom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
